CHANNEL SWIM FAILS
HALF A MILE TO GO (Rec. 1.15 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 25. When he was half a mile from the shore, a Chilean, Jorge Berroeta (28) gave up the attempt to swim the channel from Cap Grisnez to Dover. He was baulked by a change of tide after about 21 hours’ swimming. He intended to complete the first postwar crossing on the 71st anniversary of the first crossing by Captain Webb.
