MISHAPS DURING WEEK-END

TRUCK RUNS OFF ROAD TWO MEN KILLED (P.A.) TIMARU, August 25, While travelling from Fairlie to Cave early yesterday morning a truck containing six men failed to take a bend in the road at Winscombe and ran into a deep drain and hit a willow tree. The cab was driven right back over the tray. Twrf of the men were killed, and the others were injured and admitted to the Timaru Hospital. Killed Daniel Francis Leary, aged 30, single* of Totara Valley. William Sugrue, aged 24, single, of Rhodes Street, Timaru. Injured Douglas Walter Young, Timaru. Desmond Wyatt, Kerrytown. James Daly, Timaru. John Daly, Timaru. The injured men suffered shock and abrasions, and their conditions were described by the hospital authorities as being satisfactory. Both men killed were riding in the cab. All the men were employees of the Timaru Lime Company a't Cave and were returning home, from a social when the accident occurred. A seven-year-old girl was killed in-, stantly when a truck in which she was riding hit a telegraph 1 pole on the main highway, two miles from the Thames Post Office, at 7.45 p.m. on Saturday. She was Millicent Lillian Ann Allwood,, daughter of Mr Albert Frederick Alhvood, of Ttvrua. Allwood was driving the truck, which is owned by the Hauraki Carrying Company, of Turua, and was travelling toward Thames when the accident occurred. The telegraph pole was snapped by the impact, causing an interruption to the telephone system south of Thames. Allwood was admitted to the Thames Hospital. MAN KILLED AT OTAHUHU (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 24. Coming in contact with a live wire while working on the roof of a house at Otahuhu to-day, Norman Leslie Karan, a married man, aged 37, was killed. CROSSING ACCIDENT (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 24. When a motor-car he was driving collided with the West Coast express at the Kirwee level crossing at,, 11 o’clock this morning, Mr James Kennedy, aged 72, farmer, of Kirwee; and formerly of Ashburton, was killeclv'He was the only occupant of the car, which was wrecked.
