COMMUNIST CHARGE

POISON GAS MAY BE USED IN . 'CHINA (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) NANKING, Aug. 23. The Communist general, Chouenlai, told General George Marshall: “We are reliably ipfofmed that Government troops 'are planning to use poison gas in civil war offensives.” Chou asked General Marshall to pro’test strongly to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, with whom ' General Marshall is conferring at Killing soon. It is recalled that the pro-Govern-ment- paper, “Takung Pao,” made a wholly unsupported .charge that the Communists used poison gas-in the siege of Meftatung.; • Chiang Kai-shek is reported to have approval of a compromise plan placing all the disputed areas of China under full American trusteeship pending final settlements with the Communists. The trusteeship proposal would extend only to areas not clearly Communist- or Government-held, such as parts of the Shantung, Jehol* and Chabar Provinces. Government sources said the plan is the “last chance” short of civil war.
