STAFF HOUSING

COUNTY COUNCIL’S DIFFICULTY Housing for the staff proved a fruitful subject for discussion at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council yesterday afternoon, and eventually it was decided to jiroeeed with the construction of two new dwellings as soon as possible. The subject was debated in committee, and then the following statement was issued: “Local bodies throughout. New Zealand have been experiencing considerable difficulty in providing housing for their employees. In a number ol cases employees have left the service of the local body while still occupying houses owned by it, and, under the Fair Rents Act, the local body cannot obtain tenancy for the new employees. “In Ashburton County two houses are so occuped, and the council requires these urgently for their employees, as there is a danger of losing their services because of the shortage of houses. “The council has decided, therefore, to have plans and specifications drawn up for the building of two five-roomed dwellings, in the construction of which as much as possible of the council’s own Oregon timber will be used. The money for the work will be borrowed from the Government at interest at 3 per cent.”
