INTOXICATED MOTORIST AT TINWALD “You Avere extremely fortunate that you did not have an accident, for you were so intoxicated,” commented Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Ashburton this morning, when imposing a fine of £2O on Daniel Augustus McCormick, 43, of Ashburton, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of being found intoxicated in charge of a car at Timvald on July 26. It was disclosed to the court that defendant had taken out a driving licence only on the morning of the offence. Sergeant R. Henry, prosecuting, explained that about 7.45 p.m. on July 26, defendant was noticed driving his car erratically at Tinwald. He was stopped and found to be in a state of intoxication. A doctor examined him and certified that he Avas unfit to drive. He had taken out a licence only that morning. Mr V. W. Russell, for defendant, said that McCormick had been driving for 20 years and had not been convicted previously of any motoring offence. He had been granted a day off and had gone to Christchurch. The Magistrate imposed the fine as stated, with costs amounting to £1 16s. He refused counsel’s request that time be allowed defendant to pay the fine..
