VALUABLE FOOD LOST

SHIP SINKS AFTER COLLISION (Rec. 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 1. A Britain-bound United States ship, American Farmer, carrying a large cargo of food, sank after a midnight collision with another United States vessel, William J. Riddle, which was en route to America, 4SO miles from the Irish coast. The Riddle rescued six passengers and 50 of the ,crew who took to the lifeboats at the master’s orders. After transferring the rescued persons to another American, ship, the Riddle went on her way at reduced spGed. The cargo of the American Farmer included 550 tons of wheat as well as evaporated milk, dried eggs and machinery.
