LOOKING BACK
FIFTY years syne (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 2, 1896). Visit of Bishop.—His Lordship Bishop Grimes, of Christchurch, will on Tuesday, September 1, give a lecture in the Oddfellows’ Hall on the OberAmmergau passion play. The wellknown eloquence and descriptive power of the lecturer will be aided in realistic effect by panoramic views, shown by the powerful apparatus and deft handling of Mr Murray, and the incidental music will be given by a selected choir and 1 orchestra under the baton of Mr David J. Jones, organist of the church.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 2, 1921). Opening Ceremonies. —The formal opening of the additions to the Ashburton Technical High School and County Hospital will be performed tomorrow by the Hon. C. J. Parr, Minis* ter for Education and Public Health. The Minister will arrive by the second south-bound express and will proceed direct to the Technical School when, the new woodwork room and engineering shops will be opened. Short speeches will be delivered by the chair* man of the School Board (Mr C. Reid), and the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith). Immediately after the Minister will open the additions to the nurses’ home at the hospital.
