BEEF ADVANCES IN PRICE (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 31. The store sheep entry at Addington to-day was 860 adult sheep and 445 hoggets. For all classes there was an excellent demand from a large gallery of buyers. The better ewes were fully 2s a head higher and others Is to Is 6d a head better. Hoggets met a good demand at par to Is better. The best price for hoggets was 31s and for ewes 36s 9d for a pen of 57 Romney halfbred cross four-year ewes. The fat lamb entry totalled 562. The quality was high and last week’s values were maintained. Extra prime made to 45s 7d, prime 36s to 395, good 30s to 35s and medium and light 24s to 28s. Ashburton sales —P. A. Values opened at an average of £2 better than last week, and in some instances extra prime quality steers were £3 better. Values were maintained throughout the sale. Best beef sold to 67s fid, with some sales at 70s, good 50s to 57s fid, medium 40s to 47s fid ; best cow to 50s, secondary to 355, all per 1001 b. Extra prime heavv steers made to £33 2s fid, prime £2l to £25 10s, prime medium-weight £lB to £2O 10s; extra prime heifers to £24 7s fid, prime £ls 10s to £l7, medium £ll 10s to £ls; extra prime cows to £l9 12s fid, medium and light £8 10s to £ll. Holmes (Methven), Ifi cows at £l4 12s fid to £lfi 12s fid. The porker entry was larger than for some weeks and values were easier by 5s to fis. The chopper yarding was large and consisted of a fine entry of heavy-weight pigs. Values eased by £1 to £1 10s. Bac-oners were yarded in small numbers. The average price per lb was 9.)d to 10j-d.
