ATTEMPT ON RECORD

ARIES TO FLY TO NEW ZEALAND (Rec. 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, July 31. When' the R.A.F. Lancaster, Aries, takes off for NeAv Zealand from an airfield near London about August 20, an attempt will be made to establish a new record between England and the Dominion.

The present record of 602 hours Avas made by an R.A.F. Transport Command Lancastrian. The Aries, which last year made long distance flights over the area of the North Magnetic Pole, Avill probably fly to New Zealand in three stages with short stops at Bombay and Darwin for fuelling. Record-breaking is only the secondary object of the flight. . It is expected that the Aries will stay two weeks in New Zealand, and three in Australia, touring service stations. It is intended that the crew will demonstrate the use of the latest navigational facilities in aircraft, discuss current methods and practices of ah’ navigation, collect material of navigational interest by personal inquiry, lecture to service personnel, and gain experience of long distance flying over all types of terrain.
