Constable IC. A. Speak, who has been stationed at Ashburton for eight years, has resigned from the Police Force as from yesterday and begins a fortnight’s leave to-day. He has purchased a property- on the West Coast and intends to take up farming.
A young Christchurch nurse, Miss (Gem Witt, of 4 Korare Street, Fendal■ton, was the winner of the first prize .of £2OOO in the art union drawn yesterday. She is the daughter of Mr P. )B. Witt, manager of the Christchurch branch of Sargood Son and Ewen, Ltd., and came to Christchurch recently from Invercargill.
The death occurred in Wellington 'yesterday of Mr John Olive Shorland, ! a resident of Island Bay since 1903, I and a Wellington City Councillor from ! 1917 to 1921. Mr Shorland was born | in Auckland 81 years ago. In his youth lie was a champion cyclist, and he | held at some time every New Zeal- | land track record from one mile to 24 hours. He is survived by his widow, two sons and one daughter. One son is Mr W. P. Shorland, president of the .Wellington District Law Society, and •the other is Dr. F. B. Shorland, also of Wellington.—P.A.
