The Pnme Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) left Wellington by air yesterday morning for Dunedin. He will formally open the new physiotherapy block at the Dunedin Hospital to-day. He will be at Christchurch to-mor-row where, in the evening, he will give the main address at the Canterbury College commemoration day gathering. Mr Fraser is expected to return to Wellington on Saturday, and will devote the greater part of the following week to an Auckland visit, reaching there on Tuesday and returning to Wellington on Saturday.—P.A.
Mr J. W. Butcher, Government Statistician since 1932, retired yesterday after 40 years in the Public Service. — P.A.
Russell Read, son of Mr and Mrs George Read, Eiffelton, was first in the B Grade and also first in the C Grade piping contests at the Mackenzie Highland Show.
Mr George Kelly, clerk of the Ashburton County Council, is paying a visit to-day to Christchurch. He will attend a meeting of the Canterbury Progress League this evening.
Air Marshal Sir George Clark Pirie has been appointed Air„ Commander-in-Chief South-East Asia, succeeding Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park, says a London cable.
The senior medical officer of health at Auckland, Dr. T. J. Hughes, retired yesterday after more than 32 years’ service with the Health Department, most of which have been spent in Auckland. He will be succeeded by his present assistant, Dr. L. S. Davis. —P.A.
Mr D. F. Gane, Ashburton representative for Caltex Oil (N.Z.), Ltd., Avho has relinquished his connection with the firm after 18 years’ service, was entertained at a social by the staff and friends of Caltex in Christchurch. Eulogistic reference was made to Mr Gane’s service, and a presentation of a dinner .set was made to him and Mrs Gane. Mr Gane is joining the firm of Mr C. E. Bailey, Ashburton. Mr W. G. Tulloch, of Wellington, will succeed Mr Gane at Caltex.
Lieutenant-Colonel Noel E. H. Fulton, who has been senior medical officer at Burnham Military Camp for the last nine months, has received advice that his release from the forces has been granted. Dr. Fulton has served with the forces for the last four years, 15 months of which he spent in Fiji attached to the Second Commando Unit of the Fijian Military Force and later to Brigade Headquarters. Having returned to Ashburton, Dr. Fulton has resumed practice.
