PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 21. Only five more runs were scored by Wellington in their second innings Auckland in the Plunket, Shield match to-day. Auckland thus winning the match by an innings and 70 runs. The last bali of the second over of this morning’s play saw the end of Wellington’s second innings. Auckland, in their first innings, made 320 and Wellington replied with 130 and 120.
CORNWELL CUP CONTEST
AKAROA WINS FIRST RACE CHRISTCHURCH, January 21. Akaroa’s representatives, I. and C. Gibbs, won the first race for the Cornwell Cup held on Akaroa harbour this afternoon after a thrilling contest at the finish with the Auckland and Christchurch yachts. All three boats were becalmed practically on a level to leeward of the fishing buoy, and Akaroa, which was first to gather in its spinnaker, sailed in sloAvly two seconds ahead of Auckland. Christchurch followed shortly after, with Tauranga and Manukau next. The race was sailed on a triangular course in a light north-east wind. The times of the first four boats were as follows: —Akaroa, lhr 38min ssec; Auckland, lhr 38min 7sec; Christchurch, lhr 39min 15see; Tanranga, lhr 40min ssee. Next to finish were Manukau, Plirnmerton, Lyttelton, Wellington, Wanganui, Otago and Timaru.
