AUCKLAND BAKERS

MEN TO WORK 40-HOUR WEEK (P.A.) AUCKLAND. December 31-. Following the decision of the Auckland branch of the Baking Trades Employees* Union to work a 40-hour fiveday week under the terms of the Factories Amendment Act, the Master Bakers’ Association yesterday resolved: —“That in view of the threat by the Union to refuse to work on Saturdays except at overtime rates, this meeting resolves that the Union bo informed that the master bakers require the men to report for work for Saturday baking at the same time and half rates at present ruling, the Union to be requested to give definite advice of its intention by noon on Thursday, January 3.”

Mr F. H. Bourke, secretary of the Union, said this morning that the master bakers’ resolution had been referred to the men at all the main bakeries in Auckland, and they were unanimous that they should abide by the resolution and work a 40-hour week from to-morrow. The employers’ claim that the Industrial Disputes Committee fixed a six-day week for the industry last February was incorrect, said Mr Bourke. The committee had only power to fix the terms on which the men worked under the dispute at the time, and had no power to alter the. law.
