NEW YEAR WELCOMED
UNEVENTFUL RECEPTION IN ASHBURTON The New Year was ushered in in Ashburton quietly. The only demonstrations were tile blowing of steam whistles on trains, and the sounding of sirens. Some excitement was caused, however, by an outbreak of fire in a hedge at the residence of Dr. N. E. H. Fulton, of 11G Tancred Street. The Volunteer Fire Brigade was called about 12.1 f) p.m. The streets were almost, deserted shortly afterward. "A Dark Town” Brass Band of about eight players played tunes in the town, their list of calls including the Radiant Hall, where a daylight-to-day-light dance was in progress. The warm day experienced yesterday took many people out of doors, the Ashburton Domain, Hakatere and Ashton beaches being well patronised. The cricket match, Mid-Canterbury v. Southland, proved an attraction at the Domain, many people taking the opportunity to enjoy their mid-day meal in the open.
