PARATROOPERS ON “HUSH HUSH” TRIP

LONDON, Dec. 14.

A group of British paratroopers, commanded by Colonel Paddy Mayne, D. 5.0., with four bars, is reported to have left by air for Australia this week on the first stage of a “bush hush” expedition to the Antarctic, The expedition is not a normal exploration trip, but is connected with mineral and meteorological research. A similar party left for South Georgia. It is reported here that the headquarters of the expedition may be Hobart, and that the R.A.A.F. may provide a specially equipped flyingboat. The immediate objective of the trip is said to he Princess Elizabeth Land, where, it is rumoured, there are coal and uranium deposits.
