FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 18, 1895). Mayoral Installation. —The annual meeting and ceremony of mayoral installation was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Sealy), Crs. Reid, Collins, Bird; Brooke, Baker, Cuthbertson and Paul. Messrs John McLachlan and the Hon. Major Steward, M.H.R.’s, W. St. G. Douglas, C. Braddell, F. Makeig (borough assessor), D. Williams, T. Sealy, A. A. Fooks (Captain of the Fire Brigade), G W Andrews (Chairman of the Hampstead Town Board) and H. Zander.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Dec. IS, 1920’. Distinguished Passenger. Miss Freda Sternberg, advance agent for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, passed through Ashburton by the first southward express yesterday. Miss Sternberg, a well-known Vancouver journalist, has seen, most of the countries of the world, having ocfcapied the position of private secretary to Madame Melba on one of her world tours.
