SUNDERLANDS SUNK

OF NO FURTHER USE (Rec. 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 16. Over 20 Sunderland flying-boats have been sunk in the North Sea by the Royal Air Force because there is now no job for them, says the “Daily Herald” aeronautical correspondent. The Ministry of Aircraft Production admits this, but the correspondent says his information is that at least 40 have been so destroyed. All were capable of non-operational flying in any part of the y/orld. The only gear stripped off them was the radar equipment and guns. The Ministry has now stopped further sinkings, and all remaining Sunderlands are being dismantled and reduced to scrap. The official explanation is that the boats destroyed were of the early type. They were useless and the cost of reducing them to scrap was considered too high.
