PACIFICATION TOUR
affairs in java (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) BATAVIA, Dec. 16. Mr Satan Sjahrir (Prime Minister) accompanied by Dr. Soekarno, is leaving shortly on a pacification tour of Java. He stated that he fully expected, a clearer and more positive statement of Dutch policy from The Hague in the near future. Dr. Van Mook would winta recommendations to his government and as a result of his visit and 'PP&sibly of other influences at work in Holland, more acceptable proposals might icome. to the past, said Mr Sjahrir, Dr. Van Mook had been unable in his public utterances to put forwadd his own views, but had been confined within the framework of Queen Wilhelmina’s declaration. . The correspondent of the Associated Press commented that the tour may give Mr Sjahrir a chance to widen his influence in the outlying districts of Java, and at least test the feeling there. ' Informed opinion here is that the Sjahrir Cabinet’s influence in Batavia may be Quite strong, but its value outside the capital is extremely problematical, /except for a few places like Bandoeng, where its representative is vigorous and moderate.
