FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Dee. 17, 1895). New Coal Seam. —We learn that a thick seam of excellent coal has been found near the Mt. Somers colliery within the past few days, which promises to make a revolution in the supply of coal in this country. The seam is at a deeper level that the old workings. Mr Park is now engaged in opening up the seam. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Dec. 17, 1920). Personal Item —Dr. J. Russell Wells, medical superintendent of the County Hospital, was granted an extension of annual leave by the Ashburton Hospital Board this morning, owing to his indisposition. Dr. Wells is now convalescing. Dr. W. J. Mullin will continue the medical superintendent’s duties in the meantime.
