HEAVY SHOWERS LAST NIGHT Heavy showers of rain fell in Ashburton last night, nine points being recorded. This brings the total for the month to 2.70 inches.

The atmosphere was fresh to-day, with the sun shining from a lightlyclouded sky. The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 57.3 and 45.2 degrees, compared with 05.2 and 43.1 on Thursday. The barometer to-day registered 29.84 inches, against 29.57 yesterday.

FAIR TO FINE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather: General situation: The anti-cyclone over the Tasman Sea is extending in to the Dominion. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru to 5 p.m. to-morrow is as follows:

■ Moderate south-westerly winds at. first, on the coast, otherwise light, to moderate and variable; weather, fair to fine apart from a few further showers to-day about Banks Peninsula; cold night with risk of frosts inland, but temperatures milder to-mor-row.

Further outlook: Period of showers probable on Monday.
