NEW HEADMASTER

ASHBURTON EAST SCHOOL DR. W. J. BORAMAN APPOINTED To succeed Mr S. G. Macfarlane, who will retire from the teaching profession at the end of the school year, Dr. W. J. Boraman, M.A., Ph.D., has been appointed headmaster of the Ashburton East School. Dr. Boraman. who is 49 years of age, has lately taught at Lumsden, Makarewe and Mataura, being stationed in the lastmentioned district since July, 1941. Mr Macfarlane has been teaching at various centres in the South Island for 43 years, and has been headmaster at Ashburton East for 13 years. He said in an interview that his retirement was actuated by the realisation that every position vacated meant an opportunity for a younger man and the senior ladder was desperately crowded. Starting his career in 1902 at the Ashburton Borough School, Mr Macfarlane later held several appointments in various parts of Canterbury before joining the staff of the Southland Technical High School, where he served for three years. Then he took up a position with the Teachers’ Training College at Dunedin, being appointed vice-principal three years later. He retained that post until the College was closed in 1933. It is his intention to live at Ashburton. Appreciation Expressed Presenting his last report to the School Committee last evening, Ml Macfarlane thanked members for the innumerable kindnesses he had received from them during his long connection with the school. He expressed appreciation of the co-oper-ation and friendship of members of the committee and confidence that his successor would benefit from the same considerate attitude. He looked forward. he said, to the continued success of the school under its new headmaster, particularly where the promised new building was concerned. Mr' Macfarlane made special reference to his long association with the late Mr W. STjverr, who was for many years chairman of the committee. The chairman (Mr J. K. Mather) and members thanked Mr Macfarlane for his interest in the school and wished him and his wife many pleasant vears of retirement.
