OBITUARY
DR. C. E. ADAMS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 1. The death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Dr. Charles Edwaid Adams, D.Sc., F.R.A.S., who was at one time Dominion astronomer. He was born at Lawrence, Central Otago, and was educated at the Otago Boys High School and' Wellington College. Dr. Adams studied civil engineering, and won the first engineering scholarship at Canterbury College, where he was a colleague of Lord Rutherford. In 1911 he was asked to accept the position of Dominion astronomer, which he held for more than 20 years.
Dr. Adams had working experience in some of the world’s most famous observatories. In 1930 he led a New Zealand expedition to observe the total eclipse of the sun in the Tongan Islands. He was awarded a California University fellowship before the expedition, and had also visited the famous Lick Observatory (California). His wife died some years ago. SIR WILLIAM LE FLEMING (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 1. The death of Sir William Hudleston le Fleming, aged 84, occurred at New Plymouth last night. The new baronet is his eldest son. Sir Frank Thomas le Fleming. Sir William le Fleming was born at Christchurch in 1861. Sir William le Fleming was a first cousin of the eighth baronet, Sir Andrew le Fleming, who once lived at Woodgrove in Canterbury. He succeeded to the title in 1925. The baronetcy of Rydal is an English title created in 1705.
