TRAFFIC CHECK-UP.

WARRANTS AND LICENCES. GARAGES BUSY TO-DAY. Tardiness in renewing that warrant of fitness or that driver’s licence was brought swiftly to the mind of more than one motorist in Ashburton this morning by the sight of an Inspector of the Traffic Department on an intersection, stopping all traffic for a check-up. Full of good resolutions, many judiciously turned down a convenient side street to get to work by another route, but as often as not they bad only gone perhaps 100 yards when they were caught again—and this time it was too late to retreat. Four Inspectors were stationed at strategic intersections checking licences and warrants of fitness for all motor-vehicles, including trailers. One stated that those whose “credentials” were not in order would be prosecuted. Friday is always a busy clay for motor garages because of the large number of country residents wanting repairs done. Long before 9 o’clock this morning, however, before anyone from the country was in town, garages were besieged with suppliant motorists who suddenly found it essential to have their warrants of fitness renewed immediately.
