VICTORY LOAN.

NATIONAL COUNCIL’S APPEAL. VALUE OF FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 11. “New Zealanders during the war have lent more than £239,000,000 to their country to pay and equip their splendid lighting services. Every loan has been over-subscribed, but the 1945 Victory Loan,” says the National War Loan Council, “seems to be regarded as the responsibility of a comparative handful of patriotic citizens. We are in the sound position of owing more of our public debt to ourselves than to overseas investors, and this condition of financial independence should appeal to the pride of every New Zealander who can, even if it means sacrifice, lend to his country to complete its war task. “We have been reminded of what our young manhood is putting into the struggle with no prospect (as in the case of a war loan) of coming out with no loss of capital which, in the case of our young men, is the prospective earning power of a vigorous manhood. We British people, in hardly more than a century, have made New Zealand one of the best and most thriving countries in the world. The pioneering spirit which did this cannot be so weakened in 1945 that we will fail to shoulder a financial war duty which is £15,000,000 lighter than the last Victory Loan. The National War Loan Council makes almost its last appeal 1o the spirit of self-respect and independence of our people.”

ONLY £5019 INVESTED YESTERDAY. * Investments of £5019 14s 7d in the Victory Loan at Ashburton yesterday brought the percentage of the objecI tive to 56.3. The amount in hand is £160,628 7s Sd.
