LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” June 12, 189 o) Ambulance Society.—The secretary of the local Ambulance Society has returned from Christchurch, bringing with him all the necessary charts for lectures, together with as many books as could possibly be obtained. A cablegram has been sent to Australia for more books and it is hoped these will be to hand in a few days. Arrangements are now complete for the opening lecture to females at 2 p.m. to-day and for males at 8 p.m. on Monday evening. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” June 12,1920). General Birdwood’s Visit.—General Sir William Birdwood, who was in command of the Anzac Corps on Gallipoli and in France, and later commanded the Fifth Army, visited Ashburton to-day. Dressed in mufti, the General charmed everyone by his ready speech and appropriate manner. His interest in the welfare of returned men was exemplified by many inquiries, which showed him to be well informed on the subject of the treatment of disabled soldiers.
