FARMERS’ UNION REMITS. COMPENSATION AND PRICE. Two remits dealing with wheat . were received at the annual conference of the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. The first, from the Methven branch, urged that the executive investigate the position of the compensation fund for wheat, after claims for the 19-14-45 season hail been met, with a view to reporting on the possibility of increasing the percentage of cover. The second remit, from the Lauris. ton branch, dealt with the price. It requested that the attention of the authorities be drawn to the actual price of wheat ami that the public be advised. Tire first remit was adopted. Moving the adoption of the second remit, Mr R. -Middlemiss said it should be made more public that farmers were not getting 7s Id a bushel for their wheat. Non-farmers were not conversant with f.o.b. charges paid by growers. There were many other wheat-grow-ing problems which deserved more publicity, said Mr T. V. Wilkinson. The public were entitled to know what was being paid for imported wheat and of the difference in the treatment meted out .to wheatgrowers and other industries.
