CEASE FIRE IN SYRIA.

DE GAULLE EMBARRASSED. (Rec. 2.0 p.m.) LONDON, May 31. The French Commander in the Levant ordered his troops to cease fire this evening after the’ British representations. Mr Churchill’s , message to General d 6 Gaulle came as a bombshell to the French Government circles, says the Paris correspondent of the British United Press. The initial reaction was that the French Government would be ' forced to accede to the British re-> quest, but th? situation is considered humiliating, placing General de Gaulle in an embarrassing position. Late editions of Baris newspapers featured Mr Eden’s announcement in the House of Commons of British intervention in spite of the official prohibition forbidding the publication of news. Before the announcements of General Paget’s intervention and the French cease-fire order, the Beirut radio stated that Damascus had been relatively calm in the last 48 hours, and the situation in Aleppo had also improved.
