Messrs H. A. Harrison and G. Kelly (representing the County Council) and the Mayor and Town Clerk, Messrs E. C. Bathurst and R. C. Major respectively (representing the Borough Patriotic Committee) attended a meeting of the Canterbury .Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday.
The death occurred at Geraldine yesterday of Airs Adelaide Sarah Mainwaring, formerly of Ashburton, in her 90th year. Mrs Mainwaring u r as the wife of Mr F. Mainwaring who was Die firsi clerk of the Ashburton County Council when it was instituted in 1878, and he remained with the Council until his retirement in 1922, Mrs ‘Mainwaring was a member of St. Stephen’s Church and of the Ashburton Croquet Club.
The death has occurred of Mr Joseph Corkill, aged 78, Mayor of Wairoa from 1910 to 1917, and from 1918 to 1929. He w’as the first chairman of tiie Wairoa Fire Board, and chairman for several terms • of the Wairoa Harbour Board, and also a member of the Pow r er Board for several years and, since 1918, a member of the Hawke’s Bay War Relief Committee, He was a life member of the R.S.A. Mr Corkill was one of the founders of the Clydebank Settlers' Association, which carried out the esttlement and development of that area. —P.A.
