MR EDEN’S CHARM.
EFFECT ON STENOGRAPHERS. SAN FRANCISCO, May 13. The mystery of why there was no verbatim report of the press conference of the British Foreign Secretary (Mr Eden) on Thursday, is now solved, reports the “Sydney Morning Herald” correspondent at the United Nations conference. The explanation is simply a tribute to Mr Eden’s personal charm. Three American stenographers had been detailed to take note of the proceedings. None had seen the debonair Foreign Secretary before. All were highly impressionable. The result was that, at the conclusion of the conference, they found they had taken scarcely a word. They frankly admitted that, they had been too fascinated by him to remember the real purpose of their presence.
