RUGBY FOOTBALL

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM VOTING POWERS FOR REFEREES. The following team was chosen by the Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union last evening to represent Ashburton in the match against Canterbury at Lancaster Park on Monday:—Full-back, C. Bradley; three-quarters, I. Gosnell, W. Edwards and Johnson; five-eighths, W. Mellish and J. Doig; half-back, T. White; forwards, P. Holmes, C. Moore, J. Smith, R. Tonks, F. Hill (capt.), Middleton, K. Shearer and I. Gibson. Emergencies D. Doig, ,G. Watson, J. Cromie and W. Slaven. The president (Mr F. Kennedy) was appointed manager. As the team will travel by train, it was decided to ask the Canterbury Union to start the match at 2.30 p.m. A deputation from the Referees’ Association comprising Messrs S. Alexander and R. Bryce waited on the committee when the proposal that the referees’ representative should have voting power at meetings of the committee, was discussed. The president said that while the committee was in sympathy with the proposal it would be necessary to call a general meeting to alter the rules, in order to give effect to the suggestion. Owing to the difficulty of transport, it was feared that delegates from country clubs would not attend in sufficient numbers to form a quorum/ Mr Alexander thanked the committee for its sympathetic hearing, and said his association would be prepared to hold the matter over till the next annual general meeting. Mr A. C. Robinson was appointed third grade selecter. Permission was granted the Technical Old Boys Club to enter four teams in the seven-a-side tournament at Timaru on Monday. It was resolved to suggest to the Referees’ Association that it grade its referees (senior and junior) as is done by other associations. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr G. R. Dalton was carried.
