BAILEY BRIDGE.

TEMUKA RIVER CROSSING. TIMARU, This Day. Arrangements have been made with the Army authorities for the temporary spanning of the Tcmuka River where the main highway crosses it at Arowhenua by a Bailey bridge. A convoy of 14 Army trucks will transport the bridge to Tcmuka. arriving to-mor-row afternoon, and the work of erecting the bridge will commence on Wednesday morning. This advice was received by the Mayor of Temuka (Mr G. A. Harris) on Saturday. The temporary bridge will be installed just below the present, structure, said Mr R. Mclntyre (Public Works Engineer at Temuka) and will consist of two spans, one of 90 feet and one of 40 feet. The river has been divided into two streams to allow repairs to be commenced at the permanent bridge, and the bank of shingle in the centre of the river will form portion of the roadway. The old bridge will be open to foot traffic until the Bailey bridge is erected, when the new bridge will cater for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. It is emphasised that motorists will have to limit their speed on the temporary structure.
