LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Apl. 12, 1895). Lost Articles.—Last week a gold watch was lost in Ashburton. The lady advertised her loss and the watch was returned to her next day, A stirrup iron lost at the polo sports was also advertised for and promptly returned. This speaks well for the honesty of the people of Ashburton and the local paper as an effective advertising medium. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Apl. 12, 1920). Barley Crop.—A farmer in the Seaview district has threshed a large paddock of barley, the yield per acre being 94 bushels. At the current price offered for this season’s class of cereal the gross return works out at £4l 6s per acre, or practically the market value of the land. Whether this is an exceptional return or not, it would seem to allow a margin for unfavourable years, and gives cause to examine ’ the oft-repeated statement that grain growing does not pay.
