s ASSAULT BY FRENCH TROOPS.

j SHORE BATTERIES SILENCED, ! 1 LONDON, June 17. It is officially announced that French forces have invaded the island of Elba, and operations are going ahead according to schedule in the fact of determined resistance. Piauosa Island, south of Elba, has been occupied. Describing the assault on Elba, a correspondent on Elba says the enemy opened heavy mortar fire against the landing craft approaching the main beaches in Cambo Bafy, in the centrol south coast. A British naval beach party quickly established communications, and sailors, wading at times chest deep in water, aided the troops ashore.

Troops, who met no opposition on this beach, clambered up steep rocks to proceed to the' attack. ' French shock battalions landed first to wipe out batteries of heavy guns on both sides: of the bay. Landing craft had to penetrate over 2000 yards between heavily-defended cliffs to reach the objective. Every landing ship was flying the French tricolour as a tribute to Britain’s ally.
