THREAT TO CROWN
KING PETER’S MARRIAGE. BREACH AMONG HIS PEOPLE. FLOUTING OF HIS ADVISERS. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Mar. 23. The marriage of King Peter II of Yugoslavia with Princess Alexandra of Greece last Monday may cost him his throne, say observers in London. He defied the Yugoslav Army of Liberation and the virtual Premier of Yugoslavia (Marshal Tito). Many Yugoslav leaders also were strongly opposed to the marriage. He also caused a breach with his mother, Queen Marie, who refused to attend the ceremony.
Yugoslav officials say that King Peter over-rode all advice and made arrangements for his wedding him-' self. He ordered the flowers and wedding breakfast suddenly at the week-end.
In addition the King flouted his advisers to such an extent that the military representative General Mikhailovitch, the Yugoslav Chetnik leader, was invited to be present. This is taken to be an obvious gesture against Marshal Tito. It is reported in London to-day that Marshal Tito has already taken steps to freeze the £20,000,000 worth of Yugoslav reserves of gold from which King Peter is financed.
