GRAIN AND PRODUCE. THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report a brisk week on the local market. Following export inquiries, a good clearance has been effected in all suitable lines of cowgrass, Montgomery cover and certified and Italian ryegrass. There is, however, not much demand for white clover. Oats of all varieties are in strong demand at recent quotations. Most lines of potatoes are finished. An occasional order for oat sheaf chaff is coming to hand. Other markets are unchanged. The following are prices quoted to farmers on trucks at country stations, sacks extra unless otherwise stated: Wheat—Tuscan, September 6s 7d (less |d a bushel deduction retained for insurance compensation), Huntel’s 6s 9d (less deduction), Pearl 6s lid (less deduction), Marquis 7s Id. CHRISTCHURCH,, Nov. 17. There was a sharp easing in practically all classes of meat at Addington to-day. The main cause was the heavy entry. A big proportion of the spring lamb penning was passed, the remainder selling at a drop of 6s to 8s on last week. The store sheep included the first of the season hill wethers from Marlborough. There was a small attendance of buyers and the sal© was dragging for all classes. Best price for wethers was 26s 3d for local twotooths. One hundred Marlborough two-tooths made 24s 6d, 158 fourtooths 21s 6d, and the balance of the remainder made from 18s 6d to 19s 3d. The demand for hoggets was weaker, a line of 304 ewes being passed in at 345. Shorn ewe hoggets were also passed in at 24s 6d. Good ewes and lambs sold w r ell, one ■pen making 245, all counted, but medium sheep showed a drop. Fat sheep totalled about 5000, practically all shorn. In sympathy with the drop in beef and lamb there was a decided easing from the outset and this continued throughout. Best quality sheep showed a decline of from 3s to 4s a head, while there was a bigger drop for medium and light sheep. The highest price for wethers was 47s 7d and for ewes 38s 7d. Shorn hoggets sold up to 37s Id. The entry of fat cattle was 602 against 411 last week. The sale was erratic, opening weakly and firming slightly over the concluding stages, but on the average the drop ranged from 30s to 70s. Best beef made 60s per 1001 b, good 54s to 58s, medium and plain 48s to 535, best heifer beef 535. to 58s, good to 52s 6d, ordinary to 475, best cow beef to 52s 6d, good 44s to 48s, light down to 365, all per 1001 b.

There was a good offering of wellbred steers in the store pens, some attractive station lines being included. The market, however, eased in sympathy with that for fat cattle, and there were some passings. Black Poll two to two and a half-year steers made £l2. Fresh cows made up to £7 8s 6d. Fat pigs sold as follows: Light porkers, 46s Gd to 51s 6d; medium, 54s 6d to 59s 6d; heavy, £3 Is 6d to £3 7s 6d; choppers, £2 13s 6d to £6 8s 6d; light baeoners, £3 14s 6d to £4 2s 6d;»medium, £4 ,6s 6cl to £4 14s 6d; heavy, £4 18s 6d to £5 2s 6d; extra heavy, £5 12s 6d to £6 2s 6d; average price per lb, Sd to Sfd.
