MARSHAL PETAIN
SILENCE AS TO MOVEMENTS. RADIO’S SUDDEN ACTION. DISCUSSION AS TO SUCCESSOR. (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright.) (Rec. 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 17. The mystery over Marshal Petain is deepening. Neither Vichy nor the Paris radio’s hourly news bulletins to-day mentioned Petain’s activities, which have always been reported in detail, no matter how unimportant. This silence follows a complete black-out of the Vichy radio last night. The first news bulletin to-day was heavily jammed.
Swiss reports at the week-end said that Marshal Petain was ill, but the French radio reports yesterday said he entertained a Turkish diplomat on Monday,
The Stockholm newspaper “Svenska Dagbladet,” quoting authorised German circles, stated that Marshal Petain was expected to broadcast his speech which was cancelled at the week-end, later. The speech will include news of important political changes in the Vichy regime.
The Paris press is discussing the question of Marshal Petain’s successor.
