CHURCHILL AND NEW ZEALANDER. (Ree. 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 15. Mr Winston Churchill sent to a naval airman, C. J. R. Phelps, aged 27, of Wellington, a letter congratulating him upon a poem he composed entitled “Freedom,” says the “Evening Standard.” Phelps wrote the poem while going to Britain from New Zealand to train as a fighter pilot with the Fleet Air Arm. He was inspired by hearing, for the first time, the Warsaw Concerto in the British Broadcasting Corporation broadcast received on the ship’s radio. Phelps Went straight to his cabin and wrote the poem.
