GERMAN FLANKS WIN AT VOLTURNO. SYNCHRONISED ALLIED ATTACKS SEVERAL TOWNS CAPTURED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. IS. The sth and Bth Armies have smashed and rolled up both German flanks in Italy, says the Algiers radio. The Germans are holding only their positions in the mountains of the central sector to some extent. Reuter’s correspondent at Allied Headquarters describes the battle of Voltumo as “over and won.” He says that synchronised assaults of the sth and Bth Armies have thrown the whole Allied line a step forward. The Columbia (American) Broadcasting System’s correspondent says that the Volturno phase of the fighting is over, and the battle for the Garigliano River front is beginning. The sth Army’s eastern flank has made considerable progress to the high ground dominating this front. The Allies captm-ed 23 towns and villages in a general advance yesterday. Included in the sth Army’s captures in the rugged sector northeast of Capua were Pontelatone, Alvignamo, Liberi, Gioia and Faiechio. These were taken by the Americans. Lower down the river the British captured Brezza. The Bth Army advanced three or four miles against formidable opposition and captured San Stefano and Ripabottini, south-west of Morrone, where an enemy pocket of resistance has been wiped out. It also captured Monticilfone.
The German News Agency to-night admitted that the sth Army is fighting 10 miles north of the Volturno.
