ESCAPEE RECAPTURED
MAN CHARGED WITH THEFT. DEEDS WHILE AT LIBERTY. (P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The suspect who escaped from the police station on Friday night just prior to .being charged with the theft of a large sum from a local accountant’s office during the temporary absence Of an assistant from the room was recaptured at Evansdale on Saturday night. The deeds of this man prior to his detention and escape make an interesting story. Following the theft he went to Invercargill, where he purchased gramophone records and sidedrums from music firms on the pretext that he was interested in a band. The drums were paid for with a stolen cheque, payment on which had been stopped. Returning to Dunedin immediately he actually sold the drums to the same firm from Avho.se Invercargill branch lie purchased them. After his escape from custody he was located near Evansdale, but decamped into a sAvamp from which the police, hearing his cries for aid, rescued him immersed in mud to his hips. The man Avas an escapee originally from an institution, to Avhich he will be returned.
