NEW BRITISH GUN
“MAGNIFICENT TANK-KILLER.” ANSWER TO GERMAN TIGERS. ALL SERVICE REQUIREMENTS, (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright.) (Rec. 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 10. The British 17-pounder anti-tank gun has proved a complete answer to German Mark VI Tiger tank, and can be trusted to knock out the most heavily armoured enemy tanks up to 1000 yards range. Reports speak of the astonishing accuracy of the gun refer to it as a magnificent tank-killer. Ordinarily it would take two years to produce the gun from the time the designs are furnished. The first 17pounder was produced in five months and they have since been pouring from the factories in continuously increasing numbers. There are enough in service to meet all present requirements.
The gun measures just over 74 feet from, the muzzle to the end of the trail. It has a semi automatic breach action, which makes it possible to maintain a very high rate of fire. The trail is split, giving a wide traverse. The gun fires fixed ammunition, with shell and cartridge fitted together like a rifle cartridge and bullet. —British Official Wireless.
