THE POPE HELD BY GERMANS. LONDON, Oct. 5).
On behalf of the Catholic Heirachy of England and Wales, the Archbishop of Liverpool (Dr. Downey) states: “We learn with regret that his Holiness Pope Pius XII is virtually a piisoner in the hands of the Germans, without freedom of access to his spiritual children throughout the world. The conscience,of Christendom is shocked at this latest outrage against religion, and we appeal confidently to our fellow countrymen to join up in our prayers for the safetj and liberty of the Holy Father. The Berlin radio says that 17 armed British soldiers tried to enter the Vatican a few days ago. Swiss guards disarmed them. —British Official Wireless.
