The Fifth Army, now holding the river line from Ponte Landoleo to the Volturno northwards, faces an army of 80,000, which Kesselring has massed to meet the expected drive toward Rome, says front-line dispatches. Kesselring’s reinforcement of the Volturno line by two divisions and the rapid fortification of the defence lines indicate the Germans’ determination to join battle. The Bth Army to-day captured Guglionesi and advanced four miles at other points.—British Official Wireless. Unending streams of convoy vehicles are bringing up supplies for the next stage of the Allied drive northward. Both the stl> and the Bth Armies are consolidating position and preparing men and equipment for continuation of the drive noijthwarda The Berlin radio stated that British forces at the western end of the Italian front became active yesterday after a few days of passivity. The British attempted to cross the river near the coast road and railway. An attack against the railway bridge, carried out by a strong assault group, accompanied this action. The radio claimed that the assault forces were thrown back.
