PETROL FOR ELECTORS

PROPOSAL from oamaru. (P. 0.) OAMARU, This Day. Representations to the Government that the face value quantity of the petrol coupon for September should be made available to enable electors, particularly in country districts, to hear the views of candidates, have been made by the committee of the Independent candidate for Oamaru (Mr G. P. Cuttriss) through Mr A. P. Harper, of Wellington (Dominion secretary of the Independent group , sponsored by the People’s Movement). At a meeting of his committee, at which country districts were strongly represented, Mr Cuttriss raised the question of electors in outlying districts who resided considerable distances from even the nearest small centre. He said, quoting from’ statements made to him, that they would have sufficient petrol to enable them to attend possibly one or two meetings, but it would be impossible for them to hear the four candidates who were contesting the seat. Members of the committee also cited cases of electors who were placed, at a disadvantage, and it was unanimously decided that the position should bo placed before the Government.
