GRAIN AND PRODUCE. THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report that several lines of milling Cartons have been sold during the week. Odd inquiries have been received lor seed lines of Cartons. Dark heavy Duns are still in strong demand, but. few lines are available. Odd lines of seed wheat are still going out for sowing next month. The demand for seed and table potatoes is maintained, but shipping space is as difficult as ever to obtain. The market for all small seeds remains quiet, but firm. The following are prices quoted to farmers on trucks at country stations, sacks extra unless otherwise stated: Wheat—Tuscan, July 6s 6d (less |d a bushel deduction retained for insurance compensation), Hunters 6s 8d (less deduction), Pearl 6s lOd (less deduction), Marquis 7s, Oats—Algerians 29 6d to 3s, Gartons, A grade 3s 6d, B grade 2s 6d to 3s (nominal), Duns 3s 3d to 4s, according to quality. Chaff—G.b.o.s., £5 a ton. Ryegrass—Perennial 3s 6d to 4s 6d a bushel, Italian 3s 9d to 4s 6d a bushel, for good farmers’ dressed lines Clover—Red, 9d to lid per lb; white (uncertified) Is to Is 3d per lb. Potatoes —-Suttons £8 15s, f.0.b.5.i., white and Dakotas £8 os, f.o.b.s.i. The Egg Market. The buying price of hens’ eggs is 2s 4d and the retail price 2s 7d. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 28. At the Addington stock market today the fat cattle yarding was a large one, and prices for best and second quality showed a slight easing. Fat sheep were yarded in reduced numbers, and best quality sheep met with keen competition at recent values. Store sheep numbered about 1000, mostly ewes in lamb. There was a keen demand for these and the buying power was not satisfied.. This resulted in the best sale of the season to date. One line of 120 young sheep in lamb to Southdown rams made 29s Id. Other good lots made from 24s 6d to 26s 3d, and medium from 19s Gd to 21s. 6d. A small lines of ewes with lambs at foot made 16s all counted.' Ewe hoggets sold to 2Ss 3d and others from 19s to 26s 3d. Wether hoggets made to 18s 2d, and a pen of medium two-tooth wethers sold for 23s 6d. Fat sheep totalled 2800 against 6000 last week. The market generally showed no change on recent prices, good sheep meeting with a sustained demand, while medium and lighter sorts were somewhat dragging. The highest price for wethers was 53s Id for a small pen, and another pen made 4Ss 7d. A line of 116 long-woolled wethers sold from 40s 7d to 45s 4d. The highest price for ewes was 39s lOd. others making 32s to 36s lOd. The fat cattle entry was again a large one, comprising 550 against 590 last week. Quality was good for a midwinter offering. The market, although good, was not as animated as last week and values were down about 10s a head for best quality, and from 15s to 20s a head for second quality. Best beef mode from 47s to 50s per 1001 b and in a few cases up to 525, good beef 465, ordinary 38s to 41s, good heifer beef 45s to 4'Ss, ordinary to 395, best cow beef to 42s and medium to 365. There was a very small entry of store cattle of moderate quality and not many buyers attended. A few pens of indifferently coloured adult steers in ordinary store condition sold at £S 2s Gd to £S 3s 6d, cows, in light condition, £3 18s 6d to £4 18s 6d. The porker entry was about half that of last week. Best types made full schedule rates, hut small and unfinished lots realised very little more than store prices. Baconers were forward in medium numbers and the sale was again a keen one at prices on a par with those of the good sale last week. The average price per lb was Ssd to 9d. Store pigs sold as follow: Weaners 17s to 235; slips, 23s to 265; small stores, 25s to 28s; medium, g9s to 325; large, 34s to 3Ss. PRICES AT CLEARING SALES. Pyne, Could, Guinness held a clearing sale on account of Mr S. A. Protheroe at Tinwald yesterday. The following prices were realised: Horses. —Bay gelding, £l4; hay mares, £l4, £ll, and £(> 10s. Sheep—sS ewes at 18s 6d. At the sale of dogs by the National Mortgage and Agency Company on account of the estate of the late Mr Ewen McLennan, Allenton, a grey mare was sold for £3O 10s and a gig for £2l 10s.
