THE CHINESE WAR.

MESSAGES ON ANNIVERSARY. (N.Z. Prrss Association—Copyright.) LONDON. July G. Mr Churchill, the First Sea Lord (Admiral Sir Dudley Pound) ancl the Chief of the Air Staff (Air Chief Marshal Sir Charles Portal) have sent messages to Chungking on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of China’s struggle against Japan. Mr Churchill lias telegraphed Marshall Cliiang Kai-shek, sending the greetings of the British people and saying that neither China nor Britain will ever be likely to under-estimate the colossal difficulties and immense battles which still lie before them . The road would not /be without set-backs and disappointments but the pattern of events was now becoming clear, said Mr Churchill’s message. The initiative was being wrested from the grasp of the enemy, and the Allies could look forward with confidence and hope to the time when all over the world the aggressors were driven to unconditional surrender. £ When this was accomplished, Mr Churchill added, he had no doubt that British-Chinese collaboration, which had been tested and tempered in the fire of war, would play its rightful part in the solution of the problems of peace.

Admiral Sir Dudley Pound sent the Royal Navy’s warm greetings to the commander of the Chinese Naval Headquarters and to the Chinese people. i Air Chief Marshal Sir Charles Portal telegraphed to the chief of the Chinese Aeronautical Commission in similar terms, saying that as the Royal Air Force was now striking mortal blows against the Axis in Europe, so it fully intended to play its part in bringing to an end the tyranny of Japan in Asia.
