TRAGIC DROWNING
WIDOW AND FOUR CHILDREN. (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Juno 27. A widow and one young child were drowned and three other of her six young children are believed to hav c been drowned in the Waihopai liivei, on tho outskirts of Invercargill, on Saturday night. They are:— Emma Mcßae Atkinson Robertson, aged 37, the motherStruan Robertson, aged four. James Robertson, aged five. Nan Robertson, aged three.
Graham Robertson, aged two. Mrs Robertson’s husband, Mr James Robertson, died 10 months ago. Early on Saturday evening, according to the police, Mrs Robertson took tho children lor a walk to the nearby bridge, dropped each child into the river, and then followed them herself. The eldest child, Joan Robertson, aged seven, and one of tho twin boys, Alistcr, aged four, were able to scramble ashore.
The others are reported to have sunk immediately nr to have been carried downstream by the fast-running current of the Hooded river.
The police recovered tho bodies of the mother and one of the children, Struan, by dragging to-day.
