MOTHER’S AND CHILDREN’S NEEDS,
PLUNKET SOCIETY'S PROPOSALS
Schemes for the rationing of clothes and foodstuffs were discussed at a meeting of the Dominion Council of the Plunkot Society, held in Christchurch yesterday. After a full discussion a scheme was formulated, and it *v£s decided to offer the society's wiiole-hearted co-operation in bringing it into operation immediately. fho following resolutions were car ried:
“That the Departments of Marketing and Supply bo asked to co-operate for the purpose of inaugurating a scheme to ensure better supplies and improved distribution of food and clothing for expectant and nursing mothers and babies.’’ “That the society adhere to its previous opinion that separate and. distinctive ration coupons or books should be issued to expectant and nursing mothers (such coupons to expire six months after the birth of the baby) and to children aged, from six months to five years.” “That the Government issue bulletins to the broadcasting stations and newspapers about the availability of seasonal supplies and the coupons to he used to obtain them.” “That the Government determine its own methods of distribution of goods, having regard to the wisdom of opening central depots for the receiving of supplies and distribution to outlying districts by rural deliveries or (if necessary and practicable) by Plunket nurses.”
“That the Departments of Marketing and Supply be informed that the society is not satisfied that the requirements of mothers and babies are now receiving the priority they should.” It was suggested that special coupons issued for mothers and babies should be specially numbered and clearly marked with the expiry date. Expectant mothers’ coupons would be avail able for cot blankets, materials for babies’ clothes, oranges, eggs and woo). Similarly, children’s coupons would cover honey, prunes, dried fruits, eggs and wool. In both cases latitude would be allowed for the addition of other foodstuffs to be covered by the coupins.'
