ALLENTON SEWERAGE.
IMPROVED SERVICE NEEDED.
MATTER BEFORE THE COUNCIL.
COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME
URGED,
Increased industries in the area had hastened the need for an improved sewerage service in tho Allenton portion of the Borough, stated a letter from the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. T. Fletcher Telford), read at the meeting of tho Ashburton Borough Council last evening. Chief among these increases was the extension of the activities of Messrs Lane, Walker and Rudkin’s woollen mill and it was essential that the staff there should be provided with modern sewerage facilities.
Dr. Telford said that in his opinion the only consideration for tho Council was whether to instal a comprehensive scheme for Allenton or alternatively to overcome the present unsatisfactory state of affairs by allowing the firm to put in a septic tank and fully modernise the sanitary arrangements there. A comprehensive scheme for the whole of Allenton was suggested by Dr. Telford as tho better measure. Consideration would also have to ho given to the provision of a water supply extension for that area, wrote Dr. Telford.
“I think we should got in touch with the directors of tho firm of Messrs Lane, Walker, and Rudkin and discuss the matter with them,” said the Mayor (Dr. J. Connor).
It was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee and to get in touch with the firm regarding the cost as suggested by tho Mayor,
Mr H. W. Sherratt moved that the Drainage and Financo Committees be asked to confer with tho Engineer about a comprehensive drainage scheme for Allenton.
No now septic tanks could be installed at Allenton, said Mr E. O. Bathurst, in seconding the motion, which was carried.
