GRAIN AND PRODUCE. THE ASHBURTON MARKET.; Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report a quiet period. The recent rains have stimulated the demand for all small seeds for spring sowing. Odd inquiries have come to hand for Dun and Carton oats, but Algerians are neglected. An occasional order is being received for Partridge pens and Chevalier barley, but most of the sowing has been completed. A few small lots of table potatoes are still coming forward and are being accepted by merchants at October prices. Following are the prices quoted to farmers on trucks, at country stations, sacks extra:

Wheat —Tuscan os lid, Hunters 6s Id, Velvet and Pearl 6s 3d, Marquis and Carnot 6s 5d (all f.0.b.).

Oats A grade Gartons 3s 6d, B grade 3s to 3s 3d; Algerians 2s 6d, Duns 2s 9d to 8s 6d (according to quality). Partridge Peas—6s 6d for No. 1 quality. Chaff—G.b.o.s. £4 5s a ton.

Potatoes Sutton’s Supreme and King Edward, £ll 12s fid a ton, f.0.b., s.i. Dakotas and other varieties not specified, £ll 2s fid. These prices are for October delivery. Grass Seeds—Perennial and Italian 4s to 4s 6d, cocksfoot lid to Is Id, white clover 2s to 2s 6d, red clover lid to Is Id per lb. f

I The Egg Market. The buying price of hens’ eggs is Is 3d, and the retail price Is od. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, October 7. To-day’s Addington market showed little variation in values from the good rates ruling recently. The store sheep totalled 4152, including 2034 hoggets, 1172 shorn withers and 475 ewes and lambs. The wethers were mostly shipped sheep. All sold well at from.l.ss 9d to 24s 9d. The hogget entry was mostly confined to ewes, the best selling at up to 36s for a two-truck lot. Another pen made 35s 6d, but prices generally were down by Is fid a head. Wether hoggets were in short supply, but values showed little change on recent sales. Ewes and lambs made up to 17s fid all counted, with prices ranging mostly round 13s to 15s.

The fat sheep included a proportion of shipped shorn wethers, big-framed Romneys and some exceptionally prime lines of both ewes and wethers from the south. There was little change in values. Southern ewes made from 46fis to 56s Id, the highest price of the season for ewes. Good ewes made 34s to 40s arid light down to 265. Shorn ewes sold at 30s lOd. Heavy wethers sold up to 50s, good at 4.2 s to 475, and light to 375. Shorn wethers made to 40s.

The fat cattle comprised 492 head. Seven heavy-weight steers from the West Coast averaged £27 Is, the top pen making £27 12s 6d. Another pen of 15 steers from Banks Peninsula averaged £2l 12s, the tops making £25 12s 6d. A number of heifers ranged about £l6, tops making to £l7 17s 6d. Best quality beef ranged from 48s to 51s per 1001 b, special mediumweight to 52s 6d, good and heavy from 4os to 58s, medium 40s to 435, and secondary down to 355. The entry of store 1 cattle was smaller than usual, and there was not the same proportion of straight coloured young lines as at recent sales. Cows predominated. The sale was a keen one throughout and recent values were fully maintained.

The entry of porker pigs was of medium size and the sale Avas a good one, values being practically 'on a par Avith those of a Avcek ago. Choppers Avere in average supply and values showed little change. The bacon yarding Avas similar in size and all classes were again keenly competed for. Porkers made from 57s fid to £4 9s 66d (9Jd to 11 fd lb average), and baepners from £4 16s fid to £G 9s fid (average Sd to 9£d). Store pigs sold a’s folloAV : Small wcaners 18s to 225, medium 23s to 265, bestto 335; slips, 30s to 335; small stores 38s to 425. medium 43s to 495, large 48s to 555.
