SERGEANT KILLED.
OFFICER SERIOUSLY WOUNDED.
EXPLOSION OF A CHARGE. (P.A.) BLENHEIM, October 7. A non-commissioned officer was fatally'injured and an officer was seriously wounded by an accidental explosion. The victims were: Killed. Sergeant J'ames Reginald Pepper, aged 20. His next-of-kin are Mi* and Mrs R. Pepper, of Idris Road, Christchurch. injured. Second-Lieutenant John Graham Cookson, of Dunedin. Sergeant Pepper and Lieutenant Cookson were preparing an explosive charge for a demonstration to a party of troops. They were alone at the. time, and it is not known exactly what happened to cause 1 the detonator to explode. Both men received extensive internal injuries, from which Sergeant Pepper died a few hours later. Lieutenant Cookson was removed to the Wairau Public Hospital. His condb tion is reported to be satisfactory. A civil inquest was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. An Army Board of Inquiry was held this afternoon.
